In the context of the Final Fantasy VII universe, Materia is crystallized Mako (the planet’s life force) that contains the sealed knowledge and magic of the Ancients. Equipping these orbs into the slots of your weapons and armor allows characters to cast spells, use unique abilities, and summon powerful entities.
The core mechanics of the Materia system rely on specific types, colors, and linking strategies. The 5 Types of Materia Materia is color-coded by its function:
🟢 Magic Materia (Green): Grants access to traditional elemental, healing, and status spells (e.g., Fire, Restore, Barrier) at the cost of MP.
🟡 Command Materia (Yellow): Adds tactical physical or utility commands to your battle menu that do not cost MP (e.g., Assess, Steal, Enemy Skill).
🔵 Support Materia (Blue): Does nothing on its own but modifies other Materia when placed in adjacent, linked slots (e.g., pairing Magnify/All with Healing casts it on the whole party).
🟣 Complete / Independent Materia (Purple): Provides passive stat boosts or field perks (e.g., HP Up, MP Up, ATB Boost).
🔴 Summon Materia (Red): Allows you to call massive, god-like deities into battle to deal heavy damage. Equipment and Linked Slots
Your gear dictates how much Materia you can use and how it behaves:
Linked Slots: Visually joined together on your weapon or armor menu. You must place a Blue Support Materia in one and a compatible Green Magic or Yellow Command Materia in the other to activate special combos.
AP Growth Rates: Weapons and armor feature different AP growth rules (e.g., Normal, Double, or None). Placing Materia into a “Double” growth weapon doubles the progression speed. Progression and Leveling Materia evolves as you participate in battles:
